Teknion Recalls to Repair Office Chairs Due to Fall Hazard

The following product safety recall was voluntarily conducted by the firm in cooperation with the CPSC. Consumers should stop using the product immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Contessa Office Chairs (see photo “A”)

Units: About 60,000

Distributor: Teknion LLC, of Toronto, Canada

Manufacturer: Okamura Corp., of Japan

Hazard: The bolts holding the seat to the frame can loosen and separate, posing a fall hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Okamura has received two reports of separation of the chair’s seat from the frame. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves all Contessa chairs shipped prior to June 30, 2008. Each Contessa chair has a label indicating the date of shipment (see photo “B” – Shipping Label) which is located on the bottom of the chair seat.

Sold by: Authorized Teknion dealers nationwide from January 2004 through June 2008 for between $1,470 and $1,625.

Manufactured in: Japan

Remedy: Consumers should inspect the chair by checking the four bolts that attach the seat bottom to the chair frame (see Photo “C”). If any of the four bolts are loose or missing, consumers should stop using the chair immediately and contact a Teknion dealer for a free repair.
