Cordless Telephones Recalled by Mura NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR RELEASE June 4, 1986 Release # 86-37 Mura Announces Voluntary Recall Of Cordless Telephones Washington, D.C. -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Mura, of Shelton, Connecticut I is voluntarily recalling certain models of its cordless telephones. Mura has implemented this program because it has learned that batteries utilized by the mnaufacturers of the models listed below have, in certain instances, ruptured and shattered the cordless telephone handset. This recall applies only to the following Mura models: MP-510, MP-600, MP-610, MP-650, MP-710, MP-800 and MP-900. You should check the label on your cordless telephone handset to determine whether you have one of the units listed. Approximately 400,000 units of the models listed were distributed by Mura during the period from 1982 through 1984. If your handset indicates that it is one of the models listed above, you should immediately discontinue using it and disconnect the power supply. An ad will be appearing in local newspapers containing additional information on how to obtain a free mailer to participate in this recall program. The CPSC is aware of more than 100 incidents out of the 400,000 units distributed, but is not aware of any serious injury or deaths involving the rupture of batteries in Mura cordless telephones. Omnidirectional CB Antenna Recalled By Granada Electronics NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 13, 1986 Release # 86-07 Granada Electronics Inc. Recalls Omnidirectional CB Antenna Washington, DC -- In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Granada Electronics Inc., Brooklyn, NY is voluntarily recalling its Model M400 Omnidirectional CB base station antennas. If contact is made by the antennas with an electrical power line while being installed or taken down, the antennas have the potential for severe or fatal shock. The CPSC stated that in tests conducted on the Model M400, it failed to comply with the agency's mandatory safety standard and labeling requirements. The standard is intended to reduce the electrocution hazard if the antenna should accidentally contact a power line while being removed or installed. The standard requires labeling on the product and its packaging warning about the electrocution hazard and further requires instructions for safe installation. Granada Electronics Inc. distributed approximately 2000 of the affected antennas nationwide. The Model M400 CB Base Station Antenna consists of 14 sections of aluminum tubing which form two three-legged tripods on its mast. The CPSC is not aware of any injuries or deaths involving the Model M400 antennas. About 500 antenna-related electrocutions have been estimated to have occurred since 1976 as a result of CB antennas coming into contact with electrical power lines while the antennas are being put up or taken down. Therefore, consumers should not take down any of the recalled antennas, which are already installed. The affected antennas are being removed from dealers and replaced. Retailers who still have the model M400 in stock should return them to Granada Electronics Inc., immediately for replacement. Consumers owning any of the M400 models that have not been installed should return the antenna to the dealer for a full refund. Consumers who have already installed the M400 models should leave them alone. These persons can obtain a warning hang tag to be placed in a conspicuous location on the product to warn future users about the potential hazard. As a normal practice, individuals planning to install or take down a CB antenna should first contact their local power company for advice if overhead wires pass through the neighborhood. Read more.
Road Racing Sets & Power Pack Toy Transformers Recalled by Strombecker NEWS from CPSC U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 11, 1977 Release # 77-033 CPSC Announces Toy Recall WASHINGTON, D.C. (Apr. 11) -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today announced the recall of three electric toy road racing sets and certain power pack transformers sold separately. These items fail to comply with Federal regulations for electrically-operated toys and are, therefore, banned from sale. The recalled items, all distributed by Strombecker Corporation, Chicago, Illinois, are "ROAD AMERICA RACE SET - Model #9900," "MONZA ROAD RACE SET - Model #9902," "CAN AM ROAD RACE SET - Model #9924" and replacement power pack toy transformer Model #9703-G. Road Race Set Model numbers 9900, 9902 and 9924 contain power pack toy transformers which fail to comply with certain requirements of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) and pose a potential electrical shock hazard to the user. No injuries associated with these toys have been reported to the Commission. The power pack toy transformers are colored blue-gold or blue-yellow with a black base, the casing is labeled in part, "Power Pack Toy Transformer" near two rivets on either side of the on-off switch and hole in the base. The toys were distributed nationwide to hobby and toy stores. Electric toys are subject to regulation under the FHSA which requires banned toys to be repurchased or replaced by the manufacturer, distributor and dealer. Strombecker Corporation, in compliance with the FHSA regulations, is asking consumers to return the toy to place of purchase or directly to the manufacturer-- Strombecker Corporation, 66 North Pulaski Road, Chicago, Illinois 60624, telephone (312)638-1000 -- for a full refund including tax and reasonably necessary transportation costs or replacement if the consumer agrees to it. The Commission learned of this product as a result of a nationwide electric toy survey it conducted late last year. The Commission's Chicago Area 3ffice is monitoring the recall. Read more.
